My review of James Deavin’s show Photographs from the New World (at Jen Bekman in New York City this past November) is available in the latest issue of Afterimage magazine.
Deavin used software to make images in the virtual community known as Second Life, which is – according to its creators – “an online society within a 3D world, where users can explore, build, socialize, and participate in their own economy.”
Though unlike any “photograph” you’ve ever seen, Deavin’s images are compelling in the same way yet also open new avenues of thought about our concepts of lived-in space. I also happen to think they signal an interesting shift in the history of photography.
