The Mountain Goats Video: Sax Rohmer #1 | 02.13.08

The Mountain Goats continue to amaze with their video for “Sax Rohmer #1,” the first track from their forthcoming album Heretic Pride. (Stream the whole album at Spinner.com).

A stage curtain announces “The Mountain Gats” (the “o” is obscured by a fold in the cloth) then parts and we’re off on a wobbly adventure via hand-held camera. Looking like one glorious, continuous shot, the lens reveals the song’s lyrics as John Darnielle sings them; we follow hand-scrawled words across the floor, up and down walls, on band members palms, knuckles and foreheads.

If the song weren’t invigorating enough, it’s drums and Darnielle’s lyrics of stubborn resolve driving you up, up, up, the video pushes the damn thing over the cliff. Some Mountain Goats songs leave you sad for yourself, your friends, the whole world.

Not this one.

I want to pound my fist on the table, cut through all the voices, and get to work on something great.
