When I first encountered Mike Sacks’s “Photos of TV” in an issue of The Believer, I wanted to share some examples here. Upon venturing to his website I found that they’d been removed for the “shelf life” of that particular issue. But they’re back!
These simple stills come mostly from television news broadcasts (with a few commercials thrown in) and are hysterical – interviewees are described as “Milk Consumer,” “Loves Bone Lick Park,” and my personal favorite “Lives Down Block”.
But beyond the stomach-aching laughter is the curiosity and underlying disappointment with the absurdity of television, as well as an interesting thought piece on the relationship between still images, moving pictures, and text.
