Virtual Globetrotting user pmoore66 has pinpointed the location of forty-four Richard Serra sculptures as seen from Google Maps and Google Street view. Amusing, and kind of a useful research tool if only for fleshing out the context of the areas surrounding these sculptures.
Upon seeing the Serra’s (via greg.org), my first inclination was to “visit” the highly anticipated James Turrell Roden Crater project to see if I could snoop around a little. The massive land / light work-in-progress is located on the edge of the Painted Desert in Arizona. (VG user pnkimball got there first.)
Well, there’s not much to see (I guess I was hoping Turell’s massive beard was visible from space?), but the promise held by that clump of red dirt isn’t dulled one bit. Slated to open in 2011, the work will feature many areas similar to Turrell’s skyspaces but on a massive scale. My mind is already boggled by the prospect; I await a similar fate for my eyes.
